After the 2004–2005 disasters in Aceh and Nias, Eco Hapakat Foundation developed a modular, lightweight, earthquake-resistant emergency shelter (CM04) that can be quickly deployed and later expanded into permanent homes.
The tsunami and earthquakes in Aceh and Nias in 2004 and 2005 once again highlighted the urgent need for suitable housing concepts that allow NGOs, governments, and disaster relief agencies to quickly provide lightweight, affordable, and easy-to-assemble emergency shelters.
These shelters should be resource-efficient and offer the possibility for residents to expand or upgrade them without needing to relocate.
Such housing must meet the following criteria:
Simple to manufacture everywhere and easy to assemble even by laypeople
Made of reasonably lightweight components so that no heavy machinery is required for assembly
Easily transportable anywhere—even by truck, horse, donkey, or helicopter, in areas with damaged infrastructure
Inexpensive and quickly producible worldwide
Stockpiled in advance and ready to ship within days
Modular and expandable
Serve as a basic structure for further development into permanent housing
Highly earthquake-resistant, stable, and lightweight
The Eco Hapakat Foundation, in collaboration with construction experts, engineers, architects, and disaster relief specialists, has designed such a concept:
As an officially recognized foundation, we have the opportunity to offer internships to interested individuals.
The Eco Hapakat Foundation can provide young people with an introduction to the world of development cooperation with the Global South or offer senior experts a platform where they can make their broad knowledge and decades of professional experience available to marginalized groups.
